H A P P Y   H O L I D A Y S  !

After watching the Star Wars Trilogy over Thanksgiving, I got inspired to make some Star Wars-themed double-sided holiday postcards.  I chose Jabba The Hut and Admiral Ackbar (my two favorite characters) to get festive during the holidays!

Presenting Jabba The Hut:

Coffee Illustration Commission!

I am a coffee addict.  Regular 'ol coffee with milk, no sugar.  When I visit a coffee shop, I often do not know what to order - not that I don't like cappuccino, but because I get stuck in my old usual routine.  Sometimes it's good to see your options!
...... and this is where my new project steps in!

I just had the great honor of getting to create coffee illustrations for my friend & colleague Burr, who owns Brooklyn Fireproof, an awesome cafe and late night bar in the heart of Bushwick, Brooklyn (by the way, they serve an awesome $5 brunch there, host art exhibitions in their gallery space, and have cool music happening all the time). I used to bartend at this bar, as well as pretend to make cappuccinos on occasion in the morning when they first opened. Nowadays, BFP is quite the official coffee bar with so many types of great coffee drinks that they need illustrations to show their customers! Lucky for me, I get to draw them!

Have you ever heard of a Gibraltar?
me neither!
But now that I do know, this one may be my favorite

Using pencil, pen & ink, and watercolor, I created 8 coffee illustrations:

They all had to be framed, so when I went home to Florida, Mama Cast gave me all kinds of vintage frames.  Thanks Mom!

The final product:

THE BARRACUDA

I decided to create a painting for the Tampa Bay Lightning's 2nd Annual Open Call To Artists Exhibition.  The theme was to make a work of art (drawing, painting, or sculpture) that was themed with the city of Tampa Bay and/or it's famous hockey team, the Tampa Bay Lightning.  Seeing as how I have become quite the fan of the team, as well as growing up in Florida, I decided to take part.

After doing some research on marine life indigenous to Tampa, I felt compelled to create a barracuda loyal to his fellow hockey team.  But what does the giant barracuda eat? His rival, of course!  After doing more research on their rival team (which really means asking Marc lots of questions), I decided to paint a Florida Panthers fish.  I created a Warmouth Sunfish, another fish indigenous to Tampa, who is/was a loyal fan to the Florida Panthers.  He was in the wrong place at the wrong time!

About a week after I submitted my painting, I got a call back saying my piece made it to the final round.  Pretty exciting!  It means my barracuda will hang in the lobby of the grand ol' Tampa Bay Times Forum stadium lobby for a year!

Painting a fish in such an odd, long, and skinny size meant I needed to find a frame, fast (yikes!). Believe it or not, up to this point, I have never had to make my own frame because I would either a. find a gem at a thrift shop or  b. barter with a carpenter friend (Gavin, I still owe you a bottle of whiskey).  I decided it was time for me to man up and do it myself.  I went to Home Depot and found some cool crown molding with wood insets, bought a box saw, and went for it!

Incidentally, in the middle of all of this I got food poisoning
(from eating fish, go figure)

Making the frame may have been harder than making the painting.

Okay, making the frame was definitely harder than making the
painting (especially in my condition)
But I finally pulled it together!

Voila!

Introducing a new illustration
on good health and exercise!

"Sunday Drive"
pen/ink, watercolor

This is an illustration I created for a client who lives in Brooklyn
who firmly believes in getting good daily exercise. Walking, running,
and biking instead of driving is her thing.  Her anti-car theory does have
an upside:  replacing gas prices, traffic jams, flat tires, broken windshield wipers,
crime-related snafus, and oil changes with enticing leg muscles, reduced stress,
improved coordination, and a nicely toned derrier.
Not a bad trade-off!

Come to think of it, maybe some of the inspiration for this illustration
has something to do with my back windshield being smashed in
mysteriously in my neighborhood

and this incident being discovered minutes before Marc
and I had to drive to New Jersey

Yes, that's right!  We drove to New Jersey in the middle of a
winter evening with no back windshield.
HOLLLLAAA
(thank god for heated seats)

Back to drawing!
Happy Tuesday!

I hate Delta

Delta airlines, you're on my bad list
I waited ALL DAY to get on a flight because of your stupid broken airplane
I missed my connecting flight, the airport was boring, the wine was
bad, my sandwich was dry, and I hate Fox news

But I did have enough time to make a drawing of your airplane
while we were stuck on the runway on the next flight

Delta and Devil have the same number of letters.....what a coincidence!
